Halloween 2013

(c) 2013 Ms. Huis Herself at musenmutter.blogspot.com

Happy Halloween, everybody! Well, happy day-after-Halloween anyway. I'm so excited to share the girls' costumes with you this year! They had very interesting ideas, and I think their looks turned out great! Without further ado, here you go!

(Click on the picture to see it bigger.)

Can't quite tell what they are, exactly? Not too surprising, since they were both combination costumes. Pumpkin was a ghost-owl*-vampire while Penguin opted for zombie-vampire. Here are some close-ups of their faces.

Fun, huh?!  I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with (and what we accomplish) next year!

*Barn owls are white, so that helped with the ghostiness!

Car Talk, WI Dells to Home edition

(c) 2013 Ms. Huis Herself at musenmutter.blogspot.com

We were enjoying [maybe not the right word!] a long [extra half-hour due to stop-and-go traffic on I-94 for at least 18 miles] drive home from a wonderful weekend at Wisconsin Dells we'd enjoyed [right word!] with most of my side of the family.  Here are a few snippets of our conversations.

Me:  What was your favorite ride this weekend?
Penguin: Hm... the family raft ride!
M: Why?
Penguin, our more extroverted child: I think because you got to go on it with more people.

The girls, pointing out to me that it was almost October, and since I don't start their Halloween costumes until October, wanting to get those settled.

Me:  Well, then, have you decided what you want to be?
Pumpkin: Yes! You know!  I want to be a ghost-owl-vampire!
Me:  Um... how are we going to do that?
Penguin, interrupting:  You can guess mine!  "I vant...to drink...your BRAINS!"
Me:  Yeah?  You're sure you want to be a vampire-zombie?!

...discussion ensues regarding how to make Penguin a zombie-vampire.  Basic consensus is vampire (already have cape!) + greenish face & sores...

Me: Ok, then, how are we going to do a ghost-owl-vampire?  I don't know if I can make all those three things work.
Pumpkin: Well, the owl is a barn owl so it's white like a ghost.
Me: Ok... tell me more.
Pumpkin:  So I need a white owl costume, then add FANGS!
Me:  So... like a vampire bat, but a vampire owl?
Pumpkin: YES!

Slightly later, still in a Halloween-related conversation...

Mr. Kluges:  Hey, did you think about being a vampire-fairy?!?!?!
Pumpkin, subtext, that is ridiculous: Nooooo!
Mr. Kluges: Why not?
Pumpkin:  'Cuz that's not real!

It's a good thing I wasn't driving, 'cuz we would've went off the road with my giggling after that last bit.  Vampire-fairy =/= real, but vampire-zombie AND ghost-owl-vampire? Totally possible!

Happy Halloween

(c) 2012 Ms. Huis Herself at musenmutter.blogspot.com

Happy belated Halloween to you all!  I figured I'd better share a picture of my trick-or-treaters 'cuz they were darn cute, if I do say so myself.  Definitely my easiest year so far as a costume designer - they both wanted to be cats.  Well, they both did until Penguin saw a leopard print velvet leotard with long sleeves and legs at a second-hand store, when she promptly revised her wish to the larger, fiercer "cheetah!" version.  Fine and good, we visited a Halloween store where we found a suitable (actually quite nice) mask/tail combo... and then Pumpkin admired it so much I got her the matching mask/tail set in black rather than make her use the headband ears and elastic tail we had in the dress-up bin.  But they were adorable and warm, thanks to suitably colored fleece sweatshirts we already had, so it was all good. We even did an extra block this year in our quest for candy - my girls are getting big! :)

NaBloPoMo #6 - Halloween Picture Fun

(c) 2011 Ms. Huis Herself at musenmutter.blogspot.com

Those of you who know me in real life know how much I love Halloween. I adore costumes and dressing up and the creativity involved in taking an idea and turning it into reality.  I mean, one year I made my husband into the Arby's Oven Mitt using a couple of thrift-store mattress pads and some foam.

This year I decided to unleash that creativity on the photos that sit on our mantle.
(You could click onto the images if you want to see them in more detail.)

Cute, no?!

Happy Halloween!

P.S. Yes, I know I've been neglecting this poor little blog terribly, so to get myself back in the habit (and to catch any of you who are still occasionally checking in back up with our lives), I'm going to do National Blog Posting Month again this November.  So, check back in often & we'll see how I do!

NaBloPoMo #2 - High Hopper & Pumpkin Sandwiches

(c) 2008 Ms. Huis Herself at musenmutter.blogspot.com

Hello and welcome to NaBloPoMo Day #2. I've got ideas/themes for most of the days of the week, but for Sunday's all I have down is "Sunday Stuff." So, grab-bag it is!

Tomorrow Pumpkin is the "High Hopper" (student of the day) in her class. A booklet, "All About Me" was sent home last week for us to complete together, plus she gets to bring a special toy, plus she gets to sit by the teacher and do special jobs. Big stuff when you're 4!

She also has the option to bring a snack, so of course we are. She wanted to bring Petzels & Kisses (with M&Ms on top) so we made some, but considering that it's the first day after Halloween, and that everybody's going to be sugar-shocked, we're also bringing little pumpkin-shaped cheese sandwiches.

Since it's NaBloPoMo, and I need some "stuff" to write about this Sunday, here's how we made 'em!

First, we used a pumpkin-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the cheese. I used American slices (NOT individually wrapped!) and did three at a time. Peeling the outside edges before taking off the cutter works well.

After cutting out ALL the cheese slices, I cut out the jack-o-lantern faces. Again, keeping them together as the three-at-a-time I did before worked well, except that last one was always a little tricky to get the eyes and nose out. Still, MUCH better than one at a time!

Then it was time to cut out the bread. Unfortunately, that was one slice at a time, but it didn't go too badly. Pushing the cutter down and then wiggling the whole thing around on the cutting board for a little bit helps get through the last bit cleanly. Again, peeling off the outer edges first makes it easier.

Then I buttered the breads and we put a cheese pumpkin face on each.

Done!
(Aren't they cute?!)

(And all the leftover cheese and bread bits were used up in an egg bake for supper that night! Brilliant, if I do say so myself!)

NaBloPoMo begins

(c) 2007 Ms. Huis Herself at musenmutter.blogspot.com

I love Halloween. I've always loved the costumes and dressing up. Trying to be creative and clever and original with them is a fun challenge. I mean, one year I used a real iron to scorch a chef's hat so I could go as the "Ironed Chef." (*snort* I'm funny!)

I'm really looking forward to when the girls have ideas for what they want to be for Halloween. So far Pumpkin has been a parrot (while Mr. Kluges and I were pirates. She was all of 2 months old, and adorable!), a dinosaur/dragon, and a cowgirl. The cowgirl was cool because it was my mom's costume from when she was a girl.

This is the first year that Pumpkin had an opinion. She kind of waffled around for a while with different answers to "What do you want to be for Halloween this year?" but when I got "A black kitty!" several days in a row, I figured she'd actually chosen. And she loved it. And when I found the little infant kitty hat, I couldn't resist matching the two kids. If I would have found my witch's hat, we could have been a set! (Granted, I thought Penguin could also have gone as a "cat burglar" dressed all in black with that little skull cap... *giggle*)

In fact, all that seasonal creativity gets me excited. Carving pumpkins or dyeing eggs at Easter. It's an excuse to carve some time to be creative and crafty out of our regular lives.

I should do it more often!

(You'll never guess who wanted her pumpkin carved like a kitty... and who now wants kitties on the wall of her new pink room...)

(Hmmm... That reminds me... I think kitty presents would probably be well received at Christmas! Also, I better hurry up and start doing holiday stuff like presents and cards and such.)

Doing some catching up blog reading and came across this Easter-related post on Apartment Therapy: The Kitchen. (And no, I don't remember how I came to be reading their site fairly regularly, but it's got some fun stuff for non-apartment dwellers, too)

Tea Eggs

I would totally make these for a Halloween party, but they'd have to be called Rotten Dodo Bird Eggs or Giant Spider Eggs or something else suitable.

P.S. Happy National Garlic Day, too, I guess.
