I indulged Pumpkin and myself in a little MickeyD's on Tuesday. Yes, I know, horrible for us, unhealthy, too much fat and too much salt, blah, blah, blah, but sometimes you just gotta have the french fries, you know?
So I opened up her Happy Meal and fell into a time warp. You see, nestled there in its little plastic baggie, next to the chicken nuggets, was a tough-looking, muscular green reptile... with a purple mask on. Yup, Donatello, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, was grinning up at me.
"Wha?!" I thought. "Isn't this from, like, MY childhood years?" Lo and behold, I go to look up which turtle he is (because all I could remember of their color-coding was that Raphael was red, and that only thanks to alliteration) and I found out that there's a TMNT movie in the works for 2007.
So, just for kicks, and 'cuz anything TMNT just seems decades out of whack to me, what year do you think the first (and originally intended to be only) comic book of the turtles was made?
(Happy guessing! I'll post the answer in the comments in a few days.)

I'm guessing 1979. I think they were hot on TV around '82 or so, and it takes a couple of years to distill stuff I think.
I am going to guess 1983- because I have an original TMNT poster (before they even had multi colored masks- the masks used to be all red) that I bought circa 1986 when hanging around at the comic shop with the boys I thought were cute at the time (good lord, do I have a "type" or what?).
Working backward from the second movie, which came out the summer that Elsa had a license but I didn't (I think I have the timing on that right), which would've been around 1989, I'll say that the first movie would be 1987, with the comic being a couple of years before that, and the paper version before that....or splitting the dif between the two previous guesses: 1981.
Guessing 1982 :)
You're all close, but no cigar. According to Wikipedia, "The TMNT originated in an American comic book published by Mirage Studios in 1984."
So AKJ, with her version of carbon-dating that could be called "what boys I wanted to date dating," comes in the closest. 50 consolation Glory Points to her!
